Speech Team Places 5th at Large National Tournament

by Clem Boyd, Communication Content Manager

The Cedarville University speech team placed fifth in the speech portion of the Steve Hunt Classic, a virtual competition hosted in October by Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

The Steve Hunt Classic featured more than 40 colleges and universities from 23 states. This is Cedarville’s largest preseason tournament.

Members of the Cedarville speech team include Olivia Ball from Columbus, Ohio; Alex Boesch from Champaign, Illinois; Ave Burson from Cedarville, Ohio; Will Galkin from Murray, Utah; Maren Moses from Columbus, Ohio; Paul Miller from Chariton, Iowa; and Micaiah O'Malley from Martinsville, Indiana.

Individual honors included:

  • Ave Burson, first place for novice prose interpretation and novice informative speaking, fifth place for novice impromptu speaking
  • Will Galkin, second place, novice persuasive speaking
  • Alex Boesch, fourth place, varsity communication analysis
  • Maren Moses, first place, junior after dinner speaking

“Our showing at the Steve Hunt Classic is encouraging as we look to the rest of the season,” commented Eric Mishne, assistant professor of communication. “If we can compete well against some very competitive teams this early in the season, we are in a good place to do well at the local and national tournaments later in the season.

“The team works hard to get speeches ready as soon as possible, and in this case, it paid off to take high-quality speeches to a large tournament like this.”

In addition to the public communication experience, there’s another greater purpose for participating in such events, Mishne explained. “It is very important that we represent Jesus and Cedarville University to our speech community with grace and love.”
