Course Description

Course Overview

The course includes didactic instruction, laboratory practice, and clinical experience in a variety of settings. Lecture and laboratory experiences are coordinated with clinical experiences. Each student is expected to complete 20 hours of clinicals in addition to the 140 hours of classroom commitment. The EMS education training courses give students fundamental skills and intense training to prepare them for the National Registry Exam. After completing the course and passing the NREMT, students will be qualified to provide emergency care in a pre-hospital setting to their level of certification.

After passing the NREMT, EMT students enrolled at Cedarville University may be awarded seven semester hours toward general electives when they present the NREMT card to the Registrar's Office. Students do not have to take the course at Cedarville University to be awarded these hours.

Course Outcomes

• Students will be able to define and practice the role of the EMT in the health care delivery system.
• Students will understand and apply anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in the assessment and therapy of critically ill and injured persons.
• Students will develop skills in rapid assessment, interpretation of data, and therapeutic intervention of the ill or injured persons.
• Students will perform technical skills competently, including Basic Cardiac Life Support, patient transportation, communication, and documentation.
• Students will assume responsibility for continued growth and self-improvement.

Requirements

Admission Requirements

1. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
2. Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English. Must have a TOEFL score of 79 on the internet-based test if English is not the student's primary language.
3. Have no previous felony convictions.
4. Be at least 18 years of age at the end of the course, in accordance with OAC 4765-8-01.
5. Be able to lift 50 pounds.
6. Be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.
7. Cedarville University students must have their advisor's signature on the application form.
8. A physical must be completed prior to the start of class, including* two MMR or titer, a current flu shot, two-step TB test, the Tdap, two Varicella or titer, and Hepatitis B series of shots. The EMS Education Health History and Physical form must be used to report this information. (see "After Applying") Any student that fails to complete this by the Wednesday before class begins will be automatically dismissed from the program.
   *Note: Due to program requirements, immunization exemption forms and/or any other waiver in place of the requirements listed above are not guaranteed to be accepted by clinical sites. Students must have all childhood immunizations in order to participate in the EMT program
9. A background check must be completed prior to the start of class through Cedarville University's Campus Security office (see "After Applying"). This course is rigorous and may be offered several times during the year. Although incoming freshmen are welcome, we encourage them to take the course after one semester of study.

A student cannot be kept from taking the course because of academic concerns, however the student may receive the recommendation that he/she not take the course at this time. It is highly advisable that the student take this recommendation seriously.

Registration

Two Steps Required:

Step 1 Complete and submit the EMT Student Application to the Continuing Education office (see below).

Step 2 Once received by the Continuing Education office, a follow-up email will contain a link to complete your enrollment in the EMT course along with your payment options.

The Continuing Education office is on the third floor of Founders Hall if you want to drop it off in person.

Enrollment will remain open until the registration deadline, when payment is due. No refunds will be issued after the registration deadline. If a student wishes to withdraw, they must do so no later than one week before the class begins, in which the course fee (minus a $35 processing fee) will be refunded.

A confirmation of the class meeting time and room location will be emailed to the student the week before the class begins.

There will be no course fee refund after class has been in session for 16 class hours. A ten percent administrative fee will be deducted from the remaining course fee. Students dismissed from the program will forfeit all money paid.

After Applying

Once you have been accepted into the program, you will need the following:

Medical paperwork

Must be reported on the EMS physical form. Due on the registration deadline.

1. Current physical and two step TB test - no more than 6 months old when the class begins
2. Flu shot - current for the school year
3. 2 MMR or titer
4. 2 Varicella or titer
5. Hepatitis B series
6. Tdap - good for 10 years

Physicals are available for CU full time students by appointment at University Medical Services. Contact them to set up an appointment. If a student chooses to use their own physician, they must have the EMS physical form completed by their physician.

What is a two step TB test?

The two step TB test requires several visits to your medical facility:

1. The first tuberculin skin test (TST) is given
2. The first TST is evaluated and interpreted
3. The second TST is given 7 - 21 days later
4. The second TST is evaluated and interpreted

Students must submit proof of health insurance. Due on the registration deadline.

Ohio background check

The background check must be scheduled no later than the day of the registration deadline.

• A prior Ohio BCI background check will be acceptable if the EMS student has been a member of good standing of a fire or EMS agency and has had a BCI background check within one year of beginning clinicals. 
• A resident of Ohio for at least 5 years - need the BCI ($40)
• Not a resident of Ohio for at least 5 years - need the BCI and FBI ($65) 

EMS students are required to use Campus Security to obtain background checks. Call to schedule an appointment (937-766-7992). 

Your medical information and background check must be in our office by the registration deadline, or your registration will be canceled, and your money refunded. The only exception is for the flu shot during fall semester. In that case, the due date for the flu shot will be announced in class.

Required supplies

1. Textbook - correct edition; may be new or used
2. Workbook - must be new
3. Blood pressure cuff
4. Stethoscope

Supplies may be purchased at the Campus Store.
