About the BS in Sport Medicine + MAT Accelerated Option

Why Study Sport Medicine + MAT at Cedarville?

Cedarville University offers a BS in sport medicine + MAT accelerated completion option, allowing you to complete both degrees in just five years.

As an incoming freshman student, you can choose to begin Cedarville’s BS in sport medicine program and move into the Master of Athletic Training portion of the degree after three years. We have strategically designed the BS in sport medicine curriculum so the senior year is taken as part of the first year of the planned MAT program. When you are admitted into the MAT program, you are able to complete a BS in sport medicine, a Bible minor, and a Master of Athletic Training degree in five years.

The MAT program will equip you to pass the National Athletic Trainers Association - Board of Certification (NATA-BOC) national exam to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. Through exceptional classroom teaching and real-world, hands-on experiences, Cedarville’s MAT will train you as an effective athletic trainer who serves with Christlike compassion. Plus, Cedarville’s program is one of the few distinctly Christian MAT programs in the country.

The MAT is available in a two-year stand-alone program for those who hold a bachelor’s degree with appropriate prerequisites.

What Can I Do With an MAT?

Graduates will be able to work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Colleges
  • Professional sports teams
  • Physical therapy centers
  • Doctor’s offices

To receive the credential of Certified Athletic Trainer, all of our graduates sit for the Board of Certification (BOC). Graduates of Cedarville's program have a 15% higher first-time pass rate than the national average on the certification exam. They readily obtain positions in high schools, universities, clinical settings, and private practices across the nation. Our retention and graduation rates affirm the success of our program. Opportunities to Learn Outside the Classroom

Interprofessional Collaboration — You will benefit from interprofessional interaction with students and faculty from Cedarville’s well-established and well-regarded healthcare programs, such as nursing, pharmacy, and the PA program. You will be trained in procedures from professors from other disciplines, including wound care, suturing, pharmacology, and general medical procedures.

Clinical Experiences — During your coursework, you will complete clinical experiences with Cedarville Yellow Jackets NCAA Division II athletic teams and at local schools and medical facilities under the direction of a preceptor.

Immersive Clinical Experiences — You will complete four-, eight-, and 12-week immersive clinical experiences, where you will fulfill the role of a full-time athletic trainer, including treating patients, collaborating with the healthcare team, and filing insurance. Immersive experiences can be at places such as NFL and MLB teams, physician offices, and physical therapy clinics.

Program Curriculum

Building on your core liberal arts and Bible minor courses, you will take a variety of science and health-related courses that are prerequisites for admission to the Master of Athletic Training program.
