What is the nursing shortage, and why does it exist?

The United States is in the midst of a nursing shortage as the need for health care services continues to grow. It is projected that the nursing shortage could be nearly 500,000 by 2025 with a 40 percent RN vacancy rate across the nation (Buerhaus, 2008). Some of the reasons for this projected shortage include the following: 

  • The demand for health care services will increase as the baby boomer population ages.
  • The average age of those nurses in current practice is 46.2 years old, with anticipated retirement in the near future.
  • The anticipated reforms in the health care system will provide increased access to health care and the need for more health care providers.

What happens to patients when nurses are understaffed?

  • Compromised patient safety
  • Negative impact on patient care and undermined quality of care
  • Increased medical errors
  • Increased stress and fatigue among health professionals
  • Increased risk of death for surgical patients
  • Increased hospital reports of patient deaths and injuries (American Association of Colleges of Nursing)

Are levels of education related to patient outcomes?

Yes, according to this American Association of Colleges of Nursing Fact Sheet, an increasing body of research links baccalaureate nursing education to lower mortality rates and improved patient outcomes. Furthermore, this Institution of Medicine 2010 Report recommends that the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree be increased to 80% by 2020.

    Yes. Cedarville's B.S.N. program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and has full approval by the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Ohio Board of Nursing.

    How long does it take to complete Cedarville's B.S.N. program?

    Cedarville's nationally accredited B.S.N. program is a traditional four-year nursing program.
