Cedarville Hosts 10th Annual Family Literacy Night

by Victoria Stearns, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University’s School of Education will hold its 10th annual Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, March 15, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Cedar Cliff Elementary School. The event is open to Cedar Cliff students in grades K-5 and their families.

Students from Cedarville’s education program will collaborate with Lisa Clark, reading specialist and children’s librarian at the Greene County Public Library, to present a variety of interactive activities that will help parents support the reading development of their children.

The activities focus on empowering parents to engage with their children through reading by highlighting ways that families can be active in literacy beyond the classroom.

Cedarville students studying early childhood education, middle childhood education and multi-age special education programs will work with their respective age groups to gain real-life experience that will help them in their future careers.

Students will be working under the direction of Margaret Grigorenko, Ph.D., associate professor of education, and Ruth Sylvester, Ph.D., associate professor of education.

“I'm thrilled that the middle childhood teacher candidates have this opportunity to construct fun and purposeful literacy activities for Cedarville Elementary children and their parents,” said Sylvester. “It provides a different context for teacher candidates to put theory into practice.”

Cedar Cliff students can win books to take home and parents are provided with a packet of at-home activities that extend reading and learning opportunities.
