Fiction Students to Present Work

by Public Relations Staff

Cedarville University's Department of English, Literature, and Modern Languages will host creative writing readings by students. Writers will read their works on April 15, 22 and 29 from 11-11:50 a.m. in BTS 116. Each reading will feature four authors from the class.

“It’s important for writers to put their work out there. I’m really excited about these writers. I’ve never sat in an undergraduate fiction workshop in my life where the stories are this good,” said Andrew Graff, assistant professor of English. “The Christian worldview is directly connected to the role of the artist to make good art. We want our students to engage the arts as Christians.”

Graff teaches both ENG-3030, Creative Writing: Fiction, and ENG-4030, Advanced Workshop: Fiction. Graff graduated from the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and his fiction has been featured by NPR and Stolen Island.

“I’m excited to share our stories with everyone else,” said David Grandouiller, a junior English major from Jamestown, Ohio. “We always want to get feedback on what we could be doing better as well as understand how our work engages the listener.”

Graff’s class teaches students to communicate through storytelling both as readers and writers. Reading benefits all students by helping them understand how to relate with others.

“We all question our existence, and the creative arts help us practice empathy. This is where we practice knowing others,” said Graff. “That imaginative act of getting into another human being's existence helps us relate to one another.”
