Pharmacy Faculty to Benefit from PACER Program

by Ryan Bower, Assistant Director of Public Relations

Faculty members from Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy, along with colleagues from Wright State University and Kettering College, will benefit from a program that enhances skills that will help them transform clinical practices and educational programs.

The Professionals Accelerating Clinical and Educational Redesign (PACER) program is a three-year initiative sponsored by the American Boards of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics, along with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Just nine groups of faculty members from across the nation were chosen to participate in the PACER program, which will equip faculty with additional skills through two in-person training sessions, a collaborative site visit and coaching from the PACER leadership team.

“The PACER program will benefit the school of pharmacy by providing more interprofessional education to students,” said Thad Franz, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice. “It will also provide students a unique practice experience working alongside medical residents, nursing and psychology students in primary care settings to better patient care.”

Faculty members from the three institutions worked together on the application for inclusion in the program. Each group of applicants was asked to provide letters of support, as well as an outline of their collaborative work in current programs, plans for future programs, educational and clinical transformation plans, evaluation activities and sustainability.

Currently, Cedarville’s School of Pharmacy partners with peer institutions on two initiatives, both of which were instrumental in allowing the three schools to become a part of the PACER program.

The first partnership, which is coordinated with Wright State, is the Students Teaching Educational Plans for Success (STEPS) initiative. The program provides clients at area shelters with preventative health services and counseling to connect them with medical services.

Cedarville was awarded the 2015 Student Community Engaged Service Award by the American Association of Schools of Pharmacy for its involvement with STEPS. The honor also garnered official resolutions of recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.

The second initiative, known as the Interprofessional Dedicated Education Unit (IDEU), is a partnership between Cedarville, Kettering College and Wright State. The project, which began in January, increased efforts to provide interprofessional education to students across a variety of medical disciplines.

Students who were part of the new program during their senior capstone experience earned a 100-percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) exam. That number is much higher than the national pass rate of just 72.8 percent.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 3,711 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 100 areas of study. Founded in 1887, Cedarville is recognized nationally for its authentic Christian community, rigorous academic programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings and leading student satisfaction ratings.
