The 937 Project Making Impact in Local Community

by Rae McKee, Public Relations Writer

In just four months, the 937 project, a philanthropy project run by Cedarville University’s Student Government Association (SGA) has already made a massive impact on the local area by raising close to $10,000 to help feed and provide shoes for those in poverty.

On February 26 and 27, three student organizations will host a fundraiser to help further the work of The 937 Project. The event, “Sing, Dance, Laugh,” will feature the a capella group The Inversions, the improv comedy group DTR and the AYO student dance organization.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26  and 27 in the DeVries Theatre and is open to the public. Tickets are just $2, and all proceeds will go directly toward The 937 Project.

Since the inception of the initiative in October, students have served more than 700 hours in local community service projects and raised enough money to provide 550 pairs of shoes and 1,300 meals to those in need.

Students have worked with local ministries Shoes for the Shoeless and Target Dayton to assist adults and children living in poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 34.7 percent of the population of Dayton, Ohio, lives in poverty, including 40.9 percent of children in Montgomery County, where Dayton is located.

“Students have responded very positively to The 937 project,” said Patrick Holman, a junior from Carthage, Missouri, and the SGA’s philanthropy director. “It’s provided a great way for them to really get involved in outreach. It’s flexible, and students are able to easily work around their schedule in order to go out and serve.”
