Cedarville University’s Glen Duerr, Ph.D., assistant professor of international studies, will have a chapter published in “The Palgrave Handbook of Global Counterterrorism Policy,” an upcoming book on counterterrorism. The book, scheduled to be released on March 14, 2017, examines counterterrorism policies, strategies and practices through cases presented by scholars and researchers from around the world.
Duerr’s contribution, titled “Independence through terrorism? The linkages between secessionism and terrorism in the Basque Country,” proposes a two-pronged approach to countering terrorism — policing strategies and political policies.
His chapter stems from field research he conducted in the Basque Country of Spain in 2014, which was funded by a Cedarville faculty research grant. Duerr studied the Basque Country’s history of terrorism and its recent policies that have successfully maintained a ceasefire since 2011.
“My research provoked in me questions of ‘How does terrorism come to an end? How do you actually stop groups?’” stated Duerr. “In my conclusion, it seems that the two-pronged approach can slowly chip away at support for terrorism, and maybe even end it. The policies keep getting better and better. It suggests that there can be a long-term successful strategy.”
Duerr is also the author of the book “Secessionism and the European Union: The Future of Flanders, Scotland, and Catalonia” as well as numerous other peer-reviewed journal articles, papers and book chapters.
