A piano piece composed by Cedarville University professor of music Dr. Steve Winteregg will take listeners on a journey through the beautiful city of Florence, Italy. The piece comes in five movements, each reflecting an aspect of Florence in a “postcard” impression.
Winteregg composed the piece in 2016 after teaching three weeks in Italy. He wanted to compose a piece to reflect on his time in Florence. It debuted during the “Farewell Concert” for retiring professor of music Dr. Charles Clevenger.
The first movement is the panoramic view of the city titled “Piazzale Michelangelo.” The second movement navigates listeners through morning rush hour before the third movement takes them to the famous Duomo Cathedral. The fourth movement is named “Ponte Vecchio” for the bridge that inspired it, and the fifth movement, “Church Bells,” reflects the city’s multitude of church bells ringing simultaneously.
“As a composer, I often express myself through the music,” said Winteregg. “I've written a lot of pieces that were inspired from my travels to places like France, Czech Republic, and China. After I compose a piece, I am brought back to those places in my memory every time I hear it.”
The piece was originally written as a piano piece for Clevenger, but ultimately turned into an orchestral composition. With the new piano recording, Winteregg will pursue publication of the piece for piano, an orchestral performance and publication of the orchestra score.
“When I use the talents that God has given me, I honor Him,” said Winteregg. “It is fun to hear a composition of mine years later and be able to thank God for His blessings. I feel very fortunate to be able to accomplish one of the things that God gifted me to do.”
