Pharmacy Students Talk Opioids at Youth Summit

by Alyssa Speicher, Public Relations Writer

Continuing to share the dangers of opioid drug abuse, Cedarville University’s Generation Rx team will present their research on opioids to regional high school student leaders at a Youth Leadership Summit April 26 at Wright State University. The summit will educate youth-led prevention groups about the importance of youth leadership and youth empowerment.

Generation Rx, a team of Cedarville pharmacy students dedicated to raising awareness of prescription drug abuse, will lead two 40-minute breakout sessions. The first session begins at 12:10 p.m., and the final one starts at 1 p.m. Generation Rx co-chairs Rachel Bull and Samantha Yates will attend the summit with their faculty adviser, Dr. Brenda Pahl, assistant professor of pharmacy practice.

Bull and Yates will encourage young leaders to spread the message about prescription drug abuse. The presentation will make the issue relevant to teenagers, dispel myths about prescription drugs and provide practical applications for young leaders. Bull and Yates will also share stories about their own leadership positions.

“Young people haven’t really been introduced to the problem yet, so we want to get on the forefront of the issue and talk to them preventatively about the dangers of prescription drug abuse,” said Bull.

Bull and Yates note that presentations like this are important because they provide a factual approach to a serious issue. They strive to help teenagers sort through bad information circulating about the topic and equip them with knowledge and skills to share facts with others.

Generation Rx frequently speaks to middle and high school students. However, the Youth Leadership Summit is a new experience for the team.

“This is our same presentation with a different viewpoint because we are presenting to leaders instead of a general class of students,” said Yates. “We’ve tailored the presentation to take a leadership stance.”
