Cedarville University’s American Enterprise Institute (AEI) executive council will host “Capitalism and Christianity in Contrasting Cultures,” on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7 pm in the Dixon Ministry Center’s Recital Hall. This is the first of a yearlong series of events encouraging students to explore the impact of public policy and social trends.
“Capitalism and Christianity” will feature Dr. John Tarwater, assistant professor of business; Dr. Bert Wheeler, professor of economics and Berry chair for free enterprise; and Dr. Marc Clauson, professor of history and law. Tarwater will share his observations on markets and morality in developing nations, Wheeler will discuss observations about developed nations such as the United States and Clauson will address biblical principles related to these topics.
“We know how markets work in first-world countries like America, but we don’t really know how these ideas economically would impact places in the third world,” said Abigail Barnes, senior prelaw major and chair of the executive council. “Having an event like this allows us to look at America and further that understanding while also getting an understanding of new areas and adding a biblical perspective.”
The event will be the executive council’s first of many for the 2017-2018 school year. A group of seven Cedarville students selected by the AEI to serve as representatives, the council’s goal is to promote educated conversation on campus about a variety of current issues.
Last year, the council hosted several events, from a discussion of populism with AEI foreign policy expert Dalibor Rohac to a leadership dinner with Michael Hendrix, director for emerging issues and research at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and a scholar at AEI.
