Cedarville Pharmacy Students Organize Area-Wide Networking Event

by Gabe Chester, Public Relations Intern

SHHP networking dinnerCedarville University’s Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) will host an annual networking dinner February 26 at 6 p.m. in Cedarville University’s event rooms. Terri Ghitman, a registered pharmacist who works for the Ohio Board of Pharmacy on the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System, will be the guest speaker.

The event will bring together student pharmacists, faculty, alumni and preceptors from the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus areas.

“I think this event will be an amazing opportunity for bringing pharmacists and students together to establish the foundation of the future,” said Dr. Zachary Robinson, an anticoagulation specialist and preceptor from Miami Valley Hospital.

Ghitman will speak on the laws and rules pertaining to pharmaceutical practices. By attending Ghitman’s talk, local professionals will earn continuing education credit required to maintain their certification and licensure; students in attendance will receive professional development credit as well.

The event allows students to network with practicing pharmacists in the area, learn about the industry and get professional development tips. With nearly 80 people registered, this year’s dinner is expected to be the largest turnout for the program.

"Partnering with our local chapter of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy grants our students access to a wealth of experience from pharmacists who work in the area,” said Dr. David Peters, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Cedarville University and faculty advisor to the SSHP. “It is an honor for these pharmacists to come to our campus and spend time discussing the practical application of pharmacy knowledge from their day-to-day responsibilities.”

Many in attendance will be third-year pharmacy graduate students from Cedarville University who are preparing to enter their fourth-year clinical rotations, also known as Advanced Practice Pharmacy Experience (APPE). Being able to meet their preceptors beforehand allows students to foster professional relationships before their fourth-year of rotation begins.

Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy is committed to connecting with their alumni and fostering long-lasting relationships. "I am excited that many alumni are joining us in this networking event, many of whom are already preceptors for us, which serves to strengthen ongoing professional relationships with our students," said Cynthia Burban, director of community engagement at Cedarville University.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 4,193 undergraduate, graduate and online students in more than 150 areas of study.
