TESOL Opens Doors

by Gabe Chester, Public Relations Intern

Cedarville University’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement will be offered once again in the 2019-2020 school year.

The endorsement allows graduates to teach kindergarten through 12th-grade English language learners (ELLs) in public schools throughout the state of Ohio and any other state with a reciprocal agreement with Ohio for teaching licensure. The endorsement is specific for education majors and will be attached to their teaching license.

The endorsement, pursued in conjunction with an internationally recognized TESOL certificate, is offered as a 19-credit hour minor and requires a practicum in a K-12 school with ELLs in the classroom.

Dr. Annis Shaver, professor of German and applied linguistics at Cedarville University, believes the endorsement is vital in helping students make cultural connections in other countries where English is often recognized as the language of trade. “Teachers with the TESOL endorsement also help prepare immigrant and refugee children for life in the U.S.,” said Shaver.

“The endorsement opens doors in other countries,” said Dr. Barbara Loach, senior professor of Spanish at Cedarville.

Cedarville also offers a 16-credit hour TESOL minor and certificate for any major or student.

“The certificate signifies that they know about language teaching, that they understand how language works, the best ways to teach language, best approaches and that they have practice in it,” said Shaver.
