Breaking Down the Ethics on Artificial Intelligence

by Nicole Hackett, Student Public Relations Writer

Dr. Seth HammanCedarville University’s Center for Apologetics and Public Christianity will present its second seminar, “A Christian Response to Artificial Intelligence,” on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 8-9 p.m. in the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies, Room 104. This event is open to the public.

Dr. Adam HammettDr. Dan DeWitt, director of the Center for Biblical Apologetics and Public Christianity and associate professor of applied theology and apologetics, will lead a discussion between Dr. Seth Hamman, director of the Center for the Advancement of Cybersecurity and associate professor of computer science, and Dr. Adam Hammett, associate professor of mathematics, as they discuss the history of computer science and artificial intelligence. After the initial discussion, there will be a time for audience questions.

“Artificial intelligence is an intriguing subject, particularly because it engages so many varied disciplines: philosophy, technology, mathematics, theology, psychology and the list goes on,” explained Hammett. “There's no chance you will comprehensively understand this topic if you wall yourself off from other academic disciplines. If you are looking to think outside of your own discipline, artificial intelligence provides a treasure-trove of opportunities for this.”

— Seth Hamman

Dan DeWittArtificial intelligence is a cutting-edge discipline, so there are many unanswered questions and lots of speculation, noted Hamman. “I hope this seminar helps to demystify computers by educating the audience on how they work,” he said. “Sometimes we are overawed by computers and we get fooled into thinking that there is no limit to what they can accomplish.”
