School of Business Administration Hosts Series on Socialism

by Benjamin Deeter, Student Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University School of Business Administration is partnering with the Center for Political Studies and Berry Chair for Free Enterprise to host a series of lectures on socialism. The speaker series, “Freedom to Flourish: Socialist Dreams. Market Realities,” includes presentations from leading business and political thought leaders.

“The Freedom to Flourish series will help to clarify the incompatibility of socialist practice with the very goals socialists proclaim,” said Dr. Bert Wheeler, professor of economics at Cedarville University

Wheeler and Dr. Jeffrey Haymond, dean of the school of business administration and professor of economics at Cedarville University, will host the series. Each event begins at 7 p.m in the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies, Room 104 at Cedarville University. The series is free and open to the public.

Notable scholars providing keynote addresses for the speaker series include:

● “The End of Socialism” by Dr. James Otteson, political economist from Wake Forest University, on February 18

● “The Siren Song of Equality” by Dr. Jay Bruce, associate professor of philosophy at John Brown University, on March 16.

● “Freedom to Flourish” by Dr. Wayne Grudem, professor of theology and biblical studies from Phoenix Seminary, on March 30.

● “The Christian Case for Free Enterprise” by Dr. Jay Richards, assistant research professor in the school of business and economy at Catholic University, on March 31.

● “The March of History: Mises vs. Marx” by Edward Stringham, president and director of research and education at the American Institute for Economic Research, on April 16.

“The lectures are timely because of the growing support by younger people for socialism,” said Wheeler. “The embrace of socialism by several leaders in the Democratic party has made the topic particularly relevant in this election year.”
