Dr. Melody Hartzler will present at the ASHP Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Cedarville University associate professor of pharmacy practice Dr. Melody Hartzler will present at the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Her session is titled “Managing Prediabetes: Beyond the Basics.”

“Rates of diabetes are increasing due to our diets, sedentary lifestyles and a whole host of other factors,” said Hartzler. “We need to move beyond looking at this problem from just one perspective and address it from a holistic approach that includes stress management and gut health.”

The presentation will teach professional pharmacists how to design pharmaceutical plans for prediabetes, evaluate functional medicine approaches, recommend nutritional supplements and evaluate individualized patient factors.

“I’m passionate about functional medicine because it’s a science-based approach to addressing underlying causes of disease instead of just treating the symptoms,” added Hartzler. “I’ve seen so many people improve with simple modifications to diet or using supplements.”

The ASHP meeting is the nation’s largest gathering of professional pharmacists, drawing more than 25,000 professional pharmacists from across the world.

Hartzler will present alongside Midwestern University associate professor Dr. Samantha Karr and Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy associate clinical professor Dr. Kristi Kelley.
