Notes
Dr. Alan Brumback, Lead Pastor of First Naples Church, reminded today’s chapel that God is the Good Shepherd by teaching through Psalms 23. He began by informing us that we have an enemy. The enemy is not flesh and blood; the enemy is Satan. He wants to steal, kill, and destroy.
However, the good news is that Jesus Christ has come to give you a more abundant life because He is the good Shepherd. When you understand that God is your Shepherd, then you can truly understand who you are as His sheep. The first step to being calm is to consider who your Shepherd is: He is powerful and personal, sustaining and satisfying.
We first need to gain a clear picture of who God is. God is above all things, before all things, and is utterly unique. He has no rivals, no equals, and no end. He cares about His people and wants to lead them as their Shepherd. A shepherd is one who guards, guides, and cares for the sheep. Sheep are stinky, defenseless, prone to wander, get stuck, and are next to the bottom of the food chain. We are like the sheep, and God is our precious Shepherd.
You may ask, why is God our Shepherd? God is our Shepherd simply because He wants to be. He wants to lead and guide us. He loves us and wants to come alongside us as we go through this journey of life. We never have to navigate life alone.
The problem we as sinners have is that we feel like God is not enough. We sin because we want more and think we can fulfill ourselves in ways other than turning to God. We tend to look at the pleasures of the world as being our shepherd instead of Him. Sure, those things may bring you temporal happiness, but they will never last. Find your fulfillment and contentment in Christ by allowing Him to guide you.
