Singing the Lord's Song — 4/2/2025 10:00 AM
Today's chapel is presented by Dr. Lyle Anderson, Senior Professor of Music at Cedarville University, and the Concert Chorale.
Notes
Today in chapel, Dr. Lyle Anderson led us through a powerful time of worship, blending music with biblical wisdom that resonated deeply with all in attendance. As he shared from his own spiritual and musical journey, he highlighted the central role that music plays in our relationship with God, drawing from Scripture to remind us of the profound connection between our worship and the truths of the Gospel.
Dr. Anderson began with a reflection on Exodus 15:2, which declares, “The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.” He emphasized how God is not just our strength but also the personification of song itself. In fact, he reminded us that “God the Father Himself sings,” showcasing the divine expression of joy and praise. This insight invites us to see our worship not just as an act of reverence, but as a reflection of God’s own joy and creativity.
Moving to Zephaniah 3:17, Dr. Anderson further unpacked the idea of God’s singing, noting that “the Holy Spirit sings through us when we sing the truth of the Gospel and the Word of God.” This was a beautiful reminder that as believers, when we sing the truths of Scripture, we participate in a sacred act of both expression and divine interaction.
Colossians 3:16 was another key passage that Dr. Anderson shared, urging us, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” He encouraged us to allow God’s Word to saturate our hearts so that our songs are not only beautiful but are also deeply rooted in the truth of Scripture, making our worship an act of both praise and proclamation.
Finally, Dr. Anderson reflected on Psalm 40:3, which says, “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.” He reminded us that our song is not only heard but also seen — our worship is a visible testimony of God’s transformative work in our lives. The joy and hope we express through song serve as a witness to the world of the power of the Gospel.
Dr. Anderson’s message today was an inspiring reminder of how music and worship are intricately woven into the life of a believer. As we sing, we align ourselves with God's nature, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and proclaiming the rich truths of Christ’s Word.
