Civil engineering at Cedarville University is about solving real problems to help real people. In this transportation project, students partnered with the Village of Cedarville to design community-focused solutions that encourage economic growth and improve safety. Through the transit collaborative team, students created conceptual designs the Village can use to pursue funding and future implementation.

Students began by engaging directly with community members at the Labor Day pancake breakfast, listening to concerns and asking questions about transportation in the Village. They analyzed traffic patterns using video cameras, ODOT traffic data, AutoCAD, and vehicle tracking software to identify parking usage, driver behavior, and potential safety issues. From simple solutions like improved road markings to more complex ideas such as a roundabout creating a monumental entrance to Cedarville, each proposal balanced technical design with community input.
By interacting with the Village Council and Revitalize Cedarville, students experienced the full scope of the engineering process — from gathering public opinion to presenting conceptual frameworks that could shape the future of Main Street, the bike path, and familiar places like Beans-n-Cream. This hands-on approach moves beyond theoretical classroom exercises, allowing students to work on problems in a community they know and care about.
The result is more than a transportation study. It’s a collaborative partnership between town and university — a win for the village and a win for Cedarville students preparing to make a lasting impact.
