Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice Dr. Shannon Yarosz from Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy explains to @WDTNTV viewers how an over-the-counter medication can help relieve common urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms and why anyone who suspects a UTI should contact a healthcare provider.

Phenazopyridine can help relieve burning, discomfort, and feelings of urinary urgency or fullness, but it treats the symptoms rather than the underlying infection. A UTI may require an antibiotic to treat the infection, so over-the-counter symptom relief can help manage discomfort in the meantime but is not a substitute for treating the infection.

Dr. Yarosz also shares practical information about phenazopyridine, including that it can turn urine a bright orange or reddish-orange color and may stain clothing or other materials. Taking the medication with food may help if it causes stomach upset, and its use is generally limited to two days. She also discusses when to seek medical attention, including if you experience fever or chills, blood in the urine, kidney problems, or have pre-existing health concerns that could affect treatment.
