In this lecture, Dr. McKay guides students through Ephesians, showing that Paul’s message centers on identity in Christ as the foundation for Christian life and relationships. Against the backdrop of Ephesus—a city known for magic, power, and manipulation—Paul emphasizes that believers no longer seek control through worldly means but rest securely in Christ, the source of every spiritual blessing. Dr. McKay explains how being “in Christ” defines the believer’s election, adoption, redemption, and inheritance, all sealed by the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of eternal security.
The second half of Ephesians turns from doctrine to practice. Because believers are in Christ, they must live differently—submitting to one another in love, walking in unity, and reflecting Christ in every sphere of life. Husbands are called to sacrificial love modeled after Christ’s love for the Church, and wives are called to respect and submit as the Church submits to Christ. Parents are to disciple rather than exasperate their children, while children learn obedience as part of their spiritual formation. Even in difficult passages such as masters and slaves, Paul calls for human dignity and mutual accountability under the lordship of Christ.
Dr. McKay also addresses questions of cultural application—such as gender roles, authority, and responding to abuse—by reminding students that biblical submission never condones harm or injustice. Every believer’s identity, security, and purpose flow from being in Christ, and that truth transforms how Christians think, work, and love in every relationship.
