New Testament | Paul's Theology

In Dr. Michael McKay’s New Testament lecture, he steps back from close exegesis to offer a sweeping overview of Paul’s letters and their role in advancing the biblical storyline. Rather than focusing on systematic theology, this session traces how Paul’s writings move God’s redemptive narrative forward in Act Five of Scripture, clarifying the kingdom of God, the identity of God’s people, and the believer’s place in the story.

Dr. Michael McKay begins by summarizing how the Gospels move the biblical narrative forward, presenting Jesus as the promised king, the perfect Adam, and the faithful fulfillment of Israel’s calling. He then shows how Paul’s letters continue that story by proclaiming Jesus as the Davidic Messiah and explaining how the kingdom of God is already present through Christ while awaiting its future fullness. Paul’s teaching on the overlap of the present evil age and the age to come helps believers understand their place in God’s unfolding plan.

A major portion of the lecture addresses Israel’s role in salvation history. Drawing from Romans 9–11, Dr. McKay explains Israel’s partial hardening, the influx of the Gentiles, and Paul’s future hope for Israel, all while emphasizing that salvation remains centered on the gospel of Jesus the Messiah. From there, the lecture highlights Paul’s redefinition of the people of God as those who are “in Christ,” forming a multi-ethnic, international community with the same mission Israel once held: representing God’s kingdom to the world.

Dr. McKay concludes by applying Paul’s theology to everyday Christian life. Believers submit to God’s story by walking in the Spirit, using spiritual gifts to serve the church, reflecting Christ’s humility and love, and living as ambassadors of a kingdom not yet fully realized. This lecture helps students see how Paul’s letters connect doctrine, identity, and mission within the grand narrative of Scripture.
