Sexual Assault Awareness Month | Myth #1

Cedarville University is participating in Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April by dispelling four of the main myths that surround sexual violence in our culture. Shannon Berkheiser, Title IX Coordinator for Cedarville University, explains that the first common myth surrounding sexual violence is that most sexual violence occurs between strangers. In realitiy, 80% of women who report sexual violence are acquainted with or know the offender.

As a University, we want to increase awareness about the causes and risk factors for sexual violence and equip individuals to take steps to prevent it. Please consider the following actions to protect yourself and advocate for those around you.

1. Follow your gut instincts and tell someone when you feel unsafe.
2. Verify someone’s reputation before getting in their car and going to an isolated place.
3. Share your location with your close friends and notify them of your plans.
4. Avoid substances that inhibit your ability to think clearly.
5. Avoid situations that you would not feel comfortable sharing where you were going with your family or close friends.

Please consider participating this month by initiating conversations with those around you and educating yourself through the resources at cedarville.edu/SpeakUp. Thank you for striving to show love for God and others and pursue integrity and excellence by encouraging one another to Speak Up.
