Theology I: Humanity (part 1)

Doctrine of Humanity | Created in God’s Image, Male and Female

What does it mean to be human — and who gets to define that? In this theology lecture, Cedarville University students begin the doctrine of humanity (anthropology) by contrasting the modern cultural view of humanity with the Bible’s teaching. Scripture presents a radically different and hope-filled vision of who we are, why we exist, and how we are meant to live.

The lecture opens by identifying anthropology as one of the most contested doctrines in contemporary culture. Modern views often claim that identity, gender, purpose, and even morality are self-defined and endlessly flexible. Scripture, however, presents humanity as created by God, accountable to God, and designed for God’s glory.

Students are reminded first of the creator–creature distinction. God alone is eternal and self-existent, while human beings are created, dependent, and derived. This truth crushes pride and vanity while simultaneously grounding human dignity. People are not cosmic accidents or products of chance but intentionally made by a wise and loving Creator. Because God made us, He alone defines who we are and what we are for.

The lecture then turns to Genesis 1–2, emphasizing that humanity is created male and female in the image of God. Men and women are equal in value, dignity, and worth, yet distinct and complementary by design. Gender is not a social construct or an optional identity but a God-given reality that shapes relationships, marriage, family, and church life. Marriage is presented as a covenant between one man and one woman, pointing beyond itself to the eternal relationship between Christ and His church.

Students also explore the biblical teaching that humans are created to work. Work is not a curse but a calling given before the fall, meant to glorify God, serve others, and steward creation. Whether in ministry, medicine, business, education, engineering, or service roles, every vocation can be done as unto the Lord. The lecture warns against both idolatry of work and laziness, calling believers to diligence, generosity, and integrity.

Finally, the session highlights that humans are created for community. God saves not merely individuals but a people. Isolation is contrary to God’s design, and the local church becomes the primary context for growth, accountability, discipleship, and love across generations and backgrounds.

This foundational lecture sets the stage for further discussion on sin, gender roles, marriage, family, and the church — all rooted in God’s original design for humanity.
