Theology I: Humanity (part 2)
Doctrine of Humanity | Created by God, Male and Female, for His Glory
In this lecture, Cedarville University students begin the doctrine of humanity by contrasting the world’s view of human identity with the Bible’s teaching. Scripture offers a clear, purposeful, and hopeful answer to who we are, why we exist, and how we are meant to live in a confused cultural moment. This session lays the theological foundation for understanding human dignity, gender, work, community, and marriage as gifts from a sovereign Creator.

The lecture begins by outlining four foundational truths from Genesis 1–2. First, human beings are created by God, not accidental products of chance. This reality humbles human pride while grounding human dignity. Because God made us, our lives have meaning, purpose, and accountability before Him.
Second, humanity is created male and female. Men and women are equal in value, dignity, and worth as image-bearers of God, yet distinct and complementary by divine design. Gender is not a social construct or a flexible identity but a God-given reality that shapes marriage, family, church life, and society. Scripture consistently affirms this design from Genesis through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles.
Third, humans are created to work. Work is not a curse but a calling given before the fall, meant to glorify God, serve others, and steward creation. Whether in manual labor, professional vocations, or ministry, all work can be done as unto the Lord. This session warns against both idolatry of work and laziness, calling believers to diligence, generosity, and faithful stewardship.
Fourth, humanity is created for community. God saves not merely individuals but a people. Isolation is contrary to God’s design, and the local church becomes the primary place where believers are known, loved, discipled, and held accountable.
A central theme of the lecture is humanity’s original calling as priestly kings. Adam was commissioned to work and keep the garden, exercising dominion as God’s representative. This calling flows through Noah, Abraham, Israel, and David, and is perfectly fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the true Priest and King. Today, the church shares in this restored calling, stewarding God’s dwelling place and pursuing holiness together.
This foundational session sets the stage for upcoming discussions on sin, redemption, gender roles, marriage, and biblical manhood and womanhood.
