Theology I: Need for the Messiah (part 1)

The Skull-Crushing Seed of the Woman | The Messiah in the Old Testament

This lecture brings Theology I to a hopeful and powerful close by tracing the promise of the Messiah across the Old Testament. Rather than ending with the darkness of sin, this session lifts our eyes to Genesis 3:15 and follows the biblical theme of the seed of the woman who will ultimately defeat the serpent. You’ll see how the Old Testament is not merely background information, but a thoroughly messianic document written to sustain hope in God’s promised Redeemer. From Genesis to the Prophets, this class shows how Scripture consistently points forward to Jesus Christ as the triumphant King who conquers evil and restores God’s people.

The session begins by reviewing the grand storyline of Scripture, creation, fall, Israel, Christ, the church, and the coming new creation. Against that backdrop, the lecture focuses on Genesis 3:15, often called the protoevangelium, the first gospel promise. God’s declaration that the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent’s head becomes a central theme woven throughout the biblical narrative.

Rather than limiting messianic expectation to isolated prophecies, this lecture highlights typology and biblical theology. You’ll see how people, events, and institutions anticipate Christ’s ultimate victory. From Cain and Abel to Pharaoh’s genocide, from Haman’s plot in Esther to Herod’s massacre in Matthew, Scripture repeatedly displays the conflict between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. Each episode deepens anticipation for the final, decisive triumph.

Using Luke 24 and John 5, the lecture also explains how Jesus Himself taught His followers to read the Old Testament as pointing to Him. The Law, the Prophets, and the Writings all testify to Christ. This approach reshapes how believers read their Bibles, not as disconnected stories, but as a unified witness to God’s redemptive plan.

As the semester concludes, this lecture leaves students with confident hope. The Messiah promised in Genesis has come, has crushed the serpent through the cross and resurrection, and will return to finish His victory. That hope fuels faith, perseverance, and joy as believers await the final triumph of Christ the King.
