Theology I: Transcendence and Immanence
God’s Transcendence and Immanence | Knowing the Majestic and Near God
In this theology lecture, Cedarville University students explore one of the most important balances in Christian doctrine: God’s transcendence and God’s immanence. Building on the doctrine of the Trinity, this session explains how God is both exalted above creation and personally near to His people. Rather than choosing between God’s majesty or His relational nearness, Scripture consistently presents both as essential to understanding who God truly is.

The lecture begins by defining God’s transcendence as His exaltation, holiness, and complete distinction from creation. God is sovereign, self-existent, and the Creator of all things out of nothing. Passages like Genesis 1 and Deuteronomy 4 emphasize that God is above and over all creation, unmatched by any other being or so-called god.
At the same time, the Bible reveals God’s immanence, His willingness to draw near and relate personally to humanity. God does this most clearly through covenant, entering into relationship with imperfect people throughout redemptive history. This nearness is seen vividly in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, where God the Son takes on flesh, dwells among His people, and redeems them. It is also seen in the New Covenant reality of the Holy Spirit indwelling believers, making them the temple of God.
The lecture contrasts the biblical view of God with false worldviews such as pantheism, deism, materialism, and moralistic therapeutic deism. Unlike these systems, Christianity proclaims a God who is both infinitely powerful and intimately involved. God is neither distant and uninvolved nor merely a friendly companion. He is the holy Lord who comforts His people, hears their prayers, and works actively in their lives.
Students are encouraged to teach, worship, pray, and live with both God’s majesty and nearness in view. The session concludes with Isaiah 66, reminding believers that the transcendent God looks with favor on those who are humble, contrite in spirit, and who tremble at His word.
