Theology I: Triune God (part 1)

Understanding the Trinity – One God, Three Persons | Theology Class Lecture

In this classroom lecture, a Cedarville University theology professor walks students through the doctrine of the Trinity, one of the most essential and challenging teachings of the Christian faith. Exploring Scripture from Genesis to the Gospels, this session explains why belief in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit sits at the very center of Christian theology and the gospel itself.

The lecture begins by affirming that Christianity is monotheistic, rooted in the confession that there is one God. At the same time, Scripture reveals three distinct persons within the one divine essence: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Students are introduced to the concept of inseparable operations, showing how each person of the Trinity has distinct roles in salvation while acting with perfect unity, as seen in passages like Ephesians 1.

The professor carefully addresses common misunderstandings, including modalism, and explains why analogies such as water, eggs, or clovers ultimately fall short. While helpful for teaching children, these comparisons cannot fully capture the infinite nature of God. Instead, Scripture itself provides the framework for understanding Trinitarian theology.

Using Old Testament texts like Genesis 1, Deuteronomy 6, Psalm 45, Psalm 110, Isaiah, and Daniel 7, the lecture demonstrates that while the Trinity is not explicitly defined in the Old Testament, clear foundations are present. These foundations are later made explicit in the New Testament through the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This session also highlights why the Trinity matters for everyday Christian life, including salvation, prayer, worship, and understanding the gospel. Rather than dismissing the Trinity as impractical or overly complex, students are encouraged to think deeply, allowing their understanding to be stretched while humbly acknowledging mystery.
