Theology I: Triune God (part 3)

Why the Trinity Matters for Christian Life | Theology Lecture on Worship, Prayer, and Mission

In this concluding theology lecture on the doctrine of the Trinity, students move beyond biblical foundations and historical debates to explore why God’s triune nature deeply matters for everyday Christian life. After reviewing Old and New Testament teaching, early creeds, and major heresies, this session focuses on theological synthesis and practical application, showing how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit shape worship, prayer, sanctification, unity, and mission.

The lecture opens with a brief review of previous sessions, revisiting core Trinitarian truths and key heresies such as Arianism, modalism, and adoptionism. Students then wrestle with challenging biblical questions, including Jesus’ statement that He does not know the day or hour of His return. Drawing on historic Christian teaching, the professor explains how Christ’s one person with two natures helps make sense of these passages without denying His full deity.

A major emphasis of the lecture is the distinction between the immanent Trinity and the economic Trinity. God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Spirit in perfect love and fellowship, lacking nothing. At the same time, this same God acts outwardly in creation, redemption, and sanctification through distinct yet inseparable roles. Passages like Ephesians 1 reveal how the Father elects, the Son redeems, and the Spirit seals, all to the praise of God’s glory.

The session then turns to practical implications. Christian prayer is shown to be deeply Trinitarian, offered to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Growth in holiness, unity within the church, and participation in God’s mission all flow from understanding who God is. The Trinity also provides a model for unity and diversity in human relationships and communities, reflecting God’s own perfect oneness and distinction.

The lecture concludes with a call to delight in the God who has revealed Himself as triune. Rather than being an abstract doctrine, the Trinity shapes how Christians worship, pray, serve, and live together for God’s glory.
