This theology lecture explores one of the most sobering doctrines in Scripture: final judgment and the reality of hell. Students begin by reviewing how tribulation and millennial views connect to the timing of Christ’s return and God’s ultimate judgment of humanity.
The class distinguishes between the judgment seat of Christ, where believers’ works are evaluated for reward, and the great white throne judgment described in Revelation 20, where unbelievers are judged according to their deeds and sentenced to eternal separation from God. Scripture consistently presents God as the righteous Judge who will do what is just.
Students then examine the biblical teaching on hell, described as a place of eternal conscious punishment, separation from God’s favorable presence, and divine judgment for sin. Key passages from Matthew, Thessalonians, Revelation, and the Gospels are used to show that hell is real, inescapable, conscious, and eternal.
The lecture also addresses alternative views such as annihilationism, universalism, and pluralism, explaining why they fail to account for the full testimony of Scripture. While acknowledging the emotional weight and difficulty of this doctrine, students are reminded that rejecting biblical teaching does not resolve the seriousness of sin or the need for redemption.
The class concludes with a pastoral reminder: the doctrine of hell should never be used to manipulate or coerce people. Instead, it must be held together with the gospel of grace, pointing sinners to the mercy, forgiveness, and salvation offered through Jesus Christ alone.
