On dusty drives through rural Nigeria, Chukwunonso “Nonso” Chukwuemeka watched the health care system break down before his eyes — villages without clinics, families without medicine and pharmacies nowhere in sight. Those childhood road trips from the capital to visit his grandparents planted a seed that would later grow into a mission: to bring hope and healing to underserved communities.

Cedarville University Pharmacy Program Addresses Global Health Care Gaps

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, is home to nearly 240 million people. Yet, according to the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, there is only one pharmacist for every 8,000 people. This statistic underscores a critical shortage in pharmaceutical care across the country.

For Chukwuemeka, a second-year Doctor of Pharmacy student at Cedarville University, the shortage is more than a number — it’s personal. The disparity reminds him of the people he saw living without access to basic health care. Now, thanks in part to the George and Lucy Malmberg Foundation Pharmacy Scholarship, his dream of helping those communities is becoming a reality.

International Pharmacy Student Inspired by Nigeria’s Health Care Needs

The scholarship, made possible through a $1 million donation from nationally renowned pharmacist Lucy Malmberg, provided financial support and affirmation that Chukwuemeka belonged in a place like Cedarville.

Born and raised in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, Chukwuemeka experienced a level of stability not available in other parts of the country.  But family trips beyond the city limits to visit his grandparents opened his eyes to the stark inequality in health care access.

“I soon realized healthcare was more of a luxury in some of these places, a luxury they could not afford,” said Chukwuemeka. “This made me sad, thinking of how I could have easily been one of them in a different lifetime.”

He was determined to do what he could to pour back into his fellow Nigerians. Initially, he considered becoming a doctor, but he ultimately chose pharmacy after realizing its broader potential to develop treatments and expand access.

“Doctors only treat you with the resources they have,” said Chukwuemeka, “but pharmacists find new treatments.”

Scholarship Support Empowers Global Impact Through Pharmacy Education

Chukwuemeka earned his undergraduate degree in pharmacology in Nigeria, and in 2024, he completed a master’s in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical formulations at the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom. Now, in his second year at Cedarville’s School of Pharmacy, he’s already found ways to serve those in need.

“Nonso’s others-centered character is a model for all of us,” said Dr. Jeffery Bates, Cedarville’s dean of pharmacy. “He has personally worked to help residents of Cedarville access medication which they could not afford without his help. God has used Nonso to assist one particular patient so she could receive a critically important and expensive medication that has slowed her chronic and progressive illness. He is an exceptional student and a tenacious leader who regularly advocates for others. “

Though far from home, Chukwuemeka quickly felt welcomed by the university community.

Dozens of international students proudly display their country's flags.“This school wants me to be here,” said Chukwuemeka. “Pursuing this degree is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I feel very supported as an international student.”

He and his brother, Chidumebi, an undergraduate senior at Cedarville, have both thrived — largely due to the encouragement and support of Cedarville’s faculty and staff.

“We really do love our international students,” said Dr. Bates. “It is refreshing to hear them share powerful stories that highlight how God has moved in and through them.”

Faith-Based Pharmacy Training Advances Global Health Care Access

As Chukuemeka continues his education, he hopes to finish well and return to Nigeria to help improve health care access — setting out to do what that little boy envisioned as he watched the countryside roll by. Thanks to Cedarville’s rigorous, holistic approach to education and the Malmberg scholarship, he is one step closer to helping rewrite the story of pharmaceutical care in Nigeria.
