As she crossed the stage to receive her diploma from Cedarville Universityin May, Olivia “Ms. L” Luckhaupt embodied a powerful message she now shares with her future students: Disabilities are not limitations but catalysts to perseverance, resilience and purpose.
Luckhaupt, a special education graduate from West Chester, Ohio, has seen her life transformed through personal injury into a platform for advocacy, inclusive education and disability awareness. Born with cataracts, a condition more commonly associated with older adults, she faced significant visual challenges from infancy.
At age 3, she was adopted from China, beginning a new chapter defined by both medical intervention and opportunity. Shortly after her adoption, she underwent surgery to remove the cataracts and receive lens implants, a procedure that improved her vision but did not fully restore it. Doctors predicted she would not be able to use a chalkboard or ride a bike, but she persevered and learned to do both.
Today, while she continues to navigate visual impairment, Luckhaupt’s story highlights broader conversations around accessibility, inclusive learning environments and the global need for equitable educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Overcoming Barriers With Community Support
One ongoing challenge is her inability to drive due to limited hand-eye coordination, a common barrier for individuals with visual impairments. Rather than viewing this as a setback, Luckhaupt emphasizes gratitude and community interdependence, recognizing the role of others in helping her maintain independence and mobility.
“Olivia’s strong character and skills are evident in the way she builds meaningful relationships with students while maintaining high expectations for their growth,” said Dr. Lynn Roper, associate professor of special education.
Choosing Special Education as a Calling
As a freshman, Luckhaupt’s dream was to work in Chick-Fil-A’s human resources department until she realized she had a greater passion: advocacy.
“A speaker at Cedarville’s Global Outreach Conference said that the best missionaries have experience in their field,” said Luckhaupt. “I have a passion for advocating, and I realized I could advocate in special education, so I switched majors.”
As she prepares to enter the field of special education, Luckhaupt aims to inspire students with diverse learning needs by modeling perseverance and self-advocacy. Her experience reflects a growing global movement toward inclusive education, where students of all abilities are empowered to thrive academically and personally.
Inspiring Students With Disabilities
Luckhaupt said her visual impairment has made her a more effective and empathetic advocate for her students.
“I don't think it will ever minimize my job or my ability to do my job,” said Luckhaupt. “I will be a part of setting students up with resources, and I come into it with so much firsthand experience with those resources. And when my students see somebody with a disability who has a career, I think that really encourages them.”
She not only inspires her students but also knows how to challenge them to grow.
As she closes her time at Cedarville University, she steps into a future with a new set of challenges and environments, but Luckhaupt is no stranger to hard work and perseverance.
“I think my vision impairment has made me stronger and more determined,” said Luckhaupt. “I’ve been learning to rely on the Lord. I remember how God takes care of the birds and the plants. He won’t forget about me.”
