Interested in pursuing law school? There is no “correct” major for law school. The most important focus is developing the skills law schools value — critical thinking, research, and analytical reasoning. At Cedarville University, we offer two excellent paths to help you get there.
Pathway #1: Major in Prelaw
Cedarville University offers a prelaw major specifically designed to prepare you for the LSAT and the academic demands of law school.
As a prelaw major, you’ll study:
- Accounting
- History
- Jurisprudence
- Political Thought
- Advanced Writing
All your courses are tailored to develop essential skills such as critical thinking, information management, and persuasive and analytical writing to help you succeed in a professional legal career.
Things To Consider
Prelaw is a focused degree program for students planning to attend law school, so if you’re exploring your long-term goals, a broader major may offer more flexibility.
Pathway #2: Choose a Traditional Major + Prelaw Courses
Cedarville University also offers a second path where you will pursue a traditional major in a different field, such as criminal justice, history, English, or political science, and take prelaw courses alongside the base courses.
Benefits of Pathway #2
There are two primary benefits to choosing the second pathway.
- Some law schools look for students who have a wide range of experience or a broader educational background (i.e. a liberal arts major).
- If you choose to not pursue law school after undergrad, choosing this second pathway allows you to keep your options open after graduation.
There Is No "Right" Path
The right path to getting to law school is the one that works best for you. Law schools admit students from many different backgrounds and majors. At Cedarville, our prelaw advisor works with students from all majors, guiding them through:
- Course selection
- LSAT preparation
- The law school application process
