Picking a Christian college isn’t just about choosing a school — it’s about choosing the environment that will shape your faith, worldview, and future calling. With so many Christian universities and Bible programs available, how do you know which one is right for you?
As a graduating high school senior, I had plans to attend college, study a specific major, and graduate ready to go into that area of work. Little did I know that God would redirect my path that summer; instead, I would be heading to a Christian school to study a completely different major. (What an amazing four years that was!) But it wasn’t always clear, and I had some decisions to make that summer about what school I would attend.
Why Asking the Right Questions Matters
Before you commit to a school, consider the most important questions to ask a Christian college to ensure it aligns with your goals, beliefs, and calling. Asking the right questions now will guide you toward choices that have positive long-term effects. Consider the following as you decide on the next steps for your college experience.
A Christian college shapes your theology, character, and ministry philosophy.
Where you go will have direct impact on your growing theological convictions and how you will engage with the local church over the course of your life.
Your education influences your future opportunities — including graduate school, ministry roles, and careers.
The teaching you receive, relationships you make, and opportunities you engage with at a Christian college can all have a bearing on your future.
Not all colleges share the same doctrinal convictions, which can lead to frustration, theological confusion, or limited preparation.
You want to be sure there is alignment so you are not constantly at odds with what the school believes and teaches. Being somewhere that holds the same values and convictions can bring great joy and contentment.
These are very important considerations, and they lead us into the kinds of things we should be looking for in a Christian college.
What Should You Evaluate in a Christian College?
First, ask if there is theological alignment with the school. Go to the website and look at the school’s doctrinal statement. Does the school hold your convictions and those of your local church?
Second, look into the academic quality of the institution. You want to be appropriately challenged in your field of study, both in what to think and how to think. Will this school help you advance in your understanding of God and how all things relate to God?
Third, consider the spiritual environment the campus cultivates. If possible, visit the school and observe how it fosters spiritual growth — both on campus and through involvement in a local church community. As you do, ask yourself: Can you see how chapel, campus life, and church participation would shape you to become more like Christ?
Finally, ask some questions about career and ministry outcomes. Graduate school and job placement should be a high priority for graduating students, and both statistics can be found on a school’s website. Is this college placing students in churches and other ministry settings after they graduate and setting them up for job success?
All of these are helpful areas to evaluate as you decide on a Christian college, so let’s look at a few more details to drill down even further.
Christian College Checklist: 8 Questions To Ask
1. What is the school’s doctrinal statement? Do you agree with it overall?
2. Are the Bible faculty academically and spiritually qualified? Do they have pastoral experience, and are they publishing material that is beneficial to the Church?
3. What does the Bible curriculum include? Will you engage in biblical languages, in-depth Bible and theology, and courses aimed at cultivating ministry skills?
4. Does the school care about the mission of the Church? Are there classes in evangelism and missions? Does the school offer opportunities to engage in local ministry as well as missions trips?
5. Is the school regionally and/or nationally accredited? If you want to go on for further education, can you do so with a degree from this school?
6. How does the university cultivate spiritual growth? How does it do so both formally and informally?
7. What is the campus culture like? Is there unity and a desire to grow and be sent as Christians to meet real Gospel needs?
8. What financial aid and scholarships are available? With that in place, can you afford to do this education and go into ministry immediately upon graduation?
How To Use These Questions
- Explore a college or university website with these questions on hand. Look for information that might answer some of your questions, like a statement of faith or a doctrinal statement.
- Ask these questions when talking with the admissions staff, professors, or current students while on a visit to the campus. Go to chapel, attend events, and see the rhythms of campus life and the overall culture that exists.
- Review the academic catalogs, not just the marketing and promotional materials.
- Pray and seek counsel from your church and your parents. If possible, talk to alumni who have attended the school.
As you explore whether a school or program is the right fit, start with these key questions. The answers will help you discern your next steps with greater clarity and confidence.
