Today's chapel is led by Cedarville University's Student Government Association. SGA Chaplain Trey Storr begins a series entitled "The Names of God". Speaking from Exodus 33 and 34, Trey teaches that Yahweh, the God Who is with us, has revealed His character; we must respond in whole-hearted worship.
Notes
In today’s student government association-led chapel, SGA chaplain Trey Storr introduces this year's SGA series on the names of God. This series will chronologically go through the names of God provided in Scripture as we learn more about who He is from each one.
God’s Covenant-keeping Name — YHWH
Going through Exodus 33, we learn that YHWH, the God who is with us, has revealed His character. We must respond in wholehearted worship. To get to this main point, you must follow the thread of Moses’s yearning to know the Lord. The name YHWH means ‘I am’ or ‘I will be.” God told Moses that He is YHWH and His name is a promise that God will fix the problem caused by sin. He will be with His people.
Who Is He?
The Israelities knew that YHWH was a name for God, but who is He? We see in the book of Exodus that Aaron built a golden calf and even called the calf YHWH. Clearly, he didn’t understand who YHWH was.
“YHWH is too glorious for man.”
Moses pleads with God to know who He is, but YHWH is too glorious. Storr demonstrated the supremacy of the Lord’s glory by exclaiming, “We are finite and small. Who are we to be in the Lord's presence? We are completely unworthy to be in the presence of our Lord.” Thankfully, by the grace of God, the story doesn’t end here.
“Man is not too broken for YHWH.”
Even though we are wretched and filled with sin, YHWH looked down on us and showed mercy. He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross, taking our death penalty with Him so that whoever calls upon His name will be saved. He chose out of His own lovingkindness to have a relationship with us after we completely neglected Him.
Application
Praise our eternal God and gratefully acknowledge the fact that YHWH is with us. It is essential that we have a relationship with Him. It is essential that we study God’s Word, learn it, dwell on it, and put it into practice. “We are YHWH’s inheritance. We must be willing to give Him everything.”
