The fair is normally held in the spring, but Career Services purposefully scheduled it in the fall this year due to a large recruitment push in the spring. During last year’s Health Professions Career Fair in January, 17 nursing students had already been signed by Kettering Health Network. As a result, Career Services decided to speed up the recruiting process by holding the fair in the fall, allowing more students to find jobs sooner.
“We’ve had a lot of success with the Health Professions Career Fair in years past. Schools and organizations are becoming more and more interested in Cedarville students due to their outstanding character and thorough preparation,” said Jeff Reep, director of career services at Cedarville University.
Organizations throughout the Miami Valley and Ohio will meet and interview prospective employees at the fair. There are 21 registrants including Dayton’s Children’s Hospital, Ohio University - Physician Assistant Program, Ohio’s Hospice, Mercy Health and Memorial Health System.
Throughout the academic year, Career Services offers seven career fairs designed to connect employers from across disciplines with students of all majors. Students can expect organizations to have personnel in attendance to discuss present or future job possibilities. Over 1,300 students attended on-campus career fairs last year.
“There’s a skill and strategy in knowing how to work a career fair. The more students attend career fairs when they’re younger, the more beneficial that experience will become as they learn to develop that skill every year,” Reep said. “It’s just as important for underclassmen to attend because even though they might not need this now, they will in a few years. If there’s not a good return on the investments for the recruiters, those organizations aren’t coming back.”
Although the fair is geared toward students in health care professions, that doesn’t mean students outside of those majors can’t attend.
“Students in marketing or accounting may think this isn’t their career fair, but it very well could be. Hospitals and organizations have marketing and accounting departments and just because the recruiter may not be recruiting for those types of positions, they may be able to give you the contact information of someone who does,” Reep stated.
To see a success story of that scenario, visit the Career Services video page and watch “Fair Well – A Success Story.”
Career Services will be sending out a company guide via email prior to the fair so students know who will be there, what they do and what they’re looking for.
Employers interested in attending can register online or call 937-766-7868, and students should pre-register via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
