Pilot General Psychology Course Draws Interest

by Madi Cannon, Public Relations Writer

A new college class format that allows high school students the opportunity to earn college credits without stepping on a college campus is now available through Cedarville University’s “Pilot Gen Psych” program. The new initiative will begin January 2017.

The class format has already generated a great amount of interest, and 50 students enrolled in seven private Christian high schools and homeschool programs across the country are already registered to take part in the class.

The new format allows students to take college-level classes in their high school classroom using university resources and materials. Kristin DeWitt, Psy.D., associate professor of psychology, will guide the high school teachers and help facilitate discussions and class activities.

"It has been such a privilege to develop this course, which highlights the truth of God's Word while exploring various topics in psychology,” said DeWitt. “This class has a unique way of facilitating rigorous college-level learning in the high schools, coupled with online discussions and assignments."

According to DeWitt, there has been an increased demand by high school students for dual-credit college courses that add to the rigor and depth they get in high school, while allowing them to get a head start on the college experience. Cedarville’s program is unique because it offers the flexibility for students to take online classes while still engaging in the peer discussions found in a traditional classroom.

The pilot approach to Cedarville’s General Psychology course is also affordable for students who desire to get a jump on their college education. The current pilot class cost is comparable to Cedarville’s regular Dual Enrollment option, with the added benefit of an in-person, professional support system.
