Studio Art Student Receives Prestigious Fellowship

by Natalia Kirychuk, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University’s Alex Paat, a junior studio art major from Galloway, Ohio, has been selected as a 2016-17 Dayton Art Institute Yeck College Art Fellowship recipient.

Paat is one of just four college art students from the Dayton area selected to teach and mentor 12 high school students. As a Yeck fellow, Paat will provide intensive instructional studio classes for the high school scholarship students, based on a curriculum the fellows create themselves. The fellowship recipients also receive a stipend to create a new body of artwork for the Yeck College Artist Fellow Exhibition on display this summer at The Dayton Art Institute.
“I am very proud of Alex,” said Annie Lee-Zimerle, assistant professor of studio art at Cedarville. “This fellowship is one of the most prestigious awards for college art students in the region. As a department, we are excited to have one of our students be given this opportunity for the second straight year.”

Christa Cape, a 2016 studio art graduate, was awarded the fellowship last year, and Paat remembers hearing of her experience. “She spoke about how broadening an experience it was to work closely with college art students who didn’t come from a Christian background,” Paat said. “I’m very excited to build off of her testimony.”

Planning meetings for the fellowship began in late October and Paat will be involved throughout the 2017 spring semester.
