Cedarville students often go above and beyond what is required. Rebecca Adams, a senior business management major from Wadsworth, Ohio, took a class assignment about leading a team to enact change or start something new to serve at a local public high school.
Adams is team captain of Cedarville’s speech team and organized a speech workshop at a Centerville High School on March 25.
Adams has been on the speech team since her freshman year and saw the team lacked a community outreach component. This year, she reached out to the speech coach at Centerville High School and pitched the idea of her team working with the high school students and sharing their experiences.
In early February, several Cedarville speech team members helped judge a tournament at Centerville High School and interacted with the high school team.
On March 25, Adams and the Cedarville speech team led the workshop at Centerville. Teaching featured warm-up activities and specific speech event instruction.
“We had a blast,” said Adams. “We enjoyed having impactful one-on-one conversations and sharing our experiences with the students. The best way to learn is to teach, so the workshop was mutually beneficial for both teams.”
“It was really nice to go back to the basics of competitive speech and remember why we compete in the first place, to communicate,” said Remy Patterson, speech team member and junior theatre performance major from St. Johns, Michigan. “It was so nice to see a high school team that was connected with each other, and I'm really hoping we get to do more of these in the future.”
This workshop served as part of Adams’ assignment in her Applied Leadership class, taught by Lt. Gen. (ret) Loren Reno, vice president for academics and professor of management.
"The leadership project in our class is a capstone opportunity for the students to apply what they have learned and to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Reno. “Becca Adams took on a challenging project that had variables beyond her easy control. The outcomes were significant, and her performance of what she learned outstanding."
