Worship Department Hosts Hymn Sing

by Bethany Priest, Public Relations Writer

Cedarville University is taking a trip through time to bring praise music past to the present while stepping into worship music’s future.

The annual old fashioned hymn sing, sponsored by the music and worship department, will take place Wednesday, April 18 at noon, and is a celebration of Christian musical heritage and the unchanging theological truths found in timeless hymns. It will be held in the Dixon Ministry Center Recital hall and is open to the public.

The time will be spent singing hymns that emphasize spiritual revival and the cross of calvary. Passages of scripture will be read in response to the sung worship. In the spirit of continuing the legacy of worship music, time will be set aside to recognize the student winners of this year’s songwriting competition for congregational worship.

“While we are singing our history we are also encouraging our future song-writers and worship leaders to write for future congregational singing,” said Susan Plemons, the event coordinator of the hymn sing and assistant professor of worship at Cedarville. “It’s a way to reach back and also encourage forward continuity.”

Plemons will accompany on the piano and lead the singing with Professor Beth Porter, who is chair of the department of music and worship. Current worship students will play in a handbell choir.

Hymnals will be provided by the music and worship departments, and, if demand is higher than supply, the words will be projected onto a screen so everyone can participate.
