Students Helping at Charitable Pharmacy in Columbus

by Nicole Hackett, Student Public Relations Writer

School of Pharmacy studentsCedarville University’s chapter of the American Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) will serve with the Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio (CPCO) to bring health care to the underserved population in Columbus. The students will volunteer at the CPCO located in the Livingston United Methodist Church, on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are so grateful for the hard work of Cedarville student interns,” said Dr. Holly Fahey, manager of clinical operations and experiential education for the CPCO. “They are professional and mission focused. Our staff and patients truly appreciate their time and dedication that puts life saving medications in the hands of patients who may otherwise go without them.”

The 12 Cedarville students will organize boxes of unused medications donated from health systems across Ohio. The medications will then be distributed to individuals who can’t afford them.

“Since the charitable pharmacy is so vital to the health of its patients, helping the pharmacy gain easier access to sorted medications is key to the success they have in patient care,” explained Matthew Merical, a second-year professional pharmacy student from Sycamore, Illinois, and the chair for the Cedarville Medication Adherence Committee within APhA-ASP.

“We will be able to help provide the medications so that the charitable pharmacy’s patients can have the opportunity and education needed to be adherent to their medications.”
