CU in Community: Raking Leaves, Sparking Conversations

by Brianna Coffey, Student Public Relations Writer

Two students raking leaves during CU in Community 2019As part of Cedarville University’s Global Outreach department’s “CU in the Community” event, a group of students will serve Village of Cedarville Residents on Saturday, Nov. 7. Projects will include raking leaves, cleaning windows, and clearing gutters. The students will work from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. throughout the community.

“Our heart is to serve by meeting a practical need, which allows us to live out the gospel,” said Keith Holcomb, Global Outreach director. “It is a way to bring light to others by serving and facilitating conversations.” Many of the members of the community like to stand outside homes and visit with the students, some even joining in to help with the work.

Students will be required to wear masks unless they are socially distanced while working outside. Aside from a few exceptions when some homeowners may ask for help inside their garages, the majority of work will be done outside.

Oftentimes, those being served will serve the students as well with brownies or cookies. Several years ago, during a CU in Community event, Holcomb was driving around to check on the student teams and saw a Cedarville resident talking to some of the students, who were asking her how they could pray for her. “She said, ‘No, I’m going to pray for you!’” Holcomb recalled. “She asked how she could pray for them, and then prayed over them in a circle.”
