Licensed professional counseling and biblical counseling are often treated as mutually exclusive, shaped by differing academic training, licensure requirements, and counseling methods. Dr. Luke Tse of Cedarville University challenges that assumption, arguing that psychology and Scripture are not always contradictory can be complementary.
Integrating Psychology and Scripture in Counseling
“There is much in psychology that complements the values of my faith,” said Tse. “Together, psychology and the Bible provide a more comprehensive view of our human conditions and skills for helping those with struggles in life.”
Tse, recently promoted to associate dean of the Cedarville University School of Allied Health and Psychology, teaches courses in psychology and Christianity, counseling skills, counseling couples and families and history and systems of psychology. Since joining Cedarville’s faculty in 2001, Tse has trained his students to integrate their biblical worldview with evidence-based psychological practices.
“Psychological information can be incredibly helpful in my work, but what is true and good comes from God,” said Tse.
Associate Dean Luke Tse’s Background in Ministry and Therapy
Tse is well-acquainted with both counseling and ministry. He earned a Master of Divinity and a doctorate in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor for six years and has practiced as a licensed marriage and family therapist for 27 years.
Training Future Counselors for Evidence-Based Practice and Faith
Informed by his combined background, Tse prepares students for a variety of careers by teaching them to use their faith and their study of the Bible to inform their psychology, particularly when professional research, counseling and theological convictions intersect.
“Christians in counseling must be anchored upon the word of truth as we delve into the investigations of psychology,” said Tse. “Good science can affirm good theology. When psychological studies are carefully conceptualized and analyzed, we find consistencies which are acceptable for Christians to use. When discrepancies seem present, we must scrutinize where investigators might have faltered or where our understandings or applications of God’s truth might need refinement.”
In addition to gaining technical competence, Tse hopes students develop a deeper understanding of God’s love and a view of counseling as both a skill and a calling.
“Our Messiah is called “Wonderful Counselor,” said Tse. “Therefore, whether as a biblical counselor or licensed practitioner, a call to counsel is sacred. It not only mimics the work of our Messiah, but it also compels us towards transformation to become more like Christ.”
Through his teaching and leadership, Tse continues to shape how future counselors approach the integration of faith and practice, preparing graduates to serve with both professional excellence and spiritual conviction.
