CLEP Test Information

CLEP Information and Policies

Effective July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026

Cedarville University participates in the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) sponsored by The College Board and administered nationally by Educational Testing Services through participating colleges and universities. This program is designed to provide the opportunity for students to earn college credit by passing examinations in subject areas in which they have already developed college-level knowledge and understanding.

Cedarville University offers CLEP tests during the academic year to current Cedarville University students and individuals who have been accepted for admission to the University. Registration forms and information regarding available test dates are available at the Office of the Registrar.

Exam and Proctoring Fees

  • The current fee for each CLEP exam is $97 plus the proctoring fee.
  • The CLEP exam fee of $97 will be paid directly to CLEP using their “My Account” system.
  • If taking the exam using CLEP's remote proctoring, the proctoring fee is paid when the CLEP exam is purchased.
  • If taking the exam at Cedarville's testing center, the administrative fee of $45 must be paid at registration.
  • An additional fee of $35 will be charged to switch to a different exam date or time after the exam is scheduled. A change of date must be completed by 5 p.m. on the day preceding the scheduled exam date.
  • There is no refund of Cedarville’s administrative fee once registration is complete.

CLEP examinations and the scores required to qualify for credit at Cedarville University are reviewed annually and are effective from July 1 through the following June 30. This year's approved CLEP examinations, necessary scores, and the Cedarville University course equivalency for each of the exams are listed following these policies. Typically, score reports are evaluated by the standards in place at the time the exam was taken. However, due to the potential for change in evaluation standards from year to year, we do not guarantee credit for any exams taken more than one year before an accepted applicant’s first term of enrollment as a degree-seeking student at Cedarville University. Accepted CLEP exam results are applied to a degree-seeking student's Cedarville University transcript upon matriculation at the University.

Exam Timing

Since the general education core requirements are designed to be foundational in the college curricular experience, efforts to fulfill these requirements through the CLEP program must be completed by the time the student has completed his or her first two full years at Cedarville. Transfer students with junior or senior classification who wish to pursue CLEP credit to satisfy general education requirements must do so by the end of their first semester of full-time attendance at Cedarville.

Exam Policies

  • Students may not pursue credit by CLEP examination for any course in which they have been enrolled or if they have taken a more advanced-level course in that discipline.
  • The College Board requires a waiting period of at least three months before repeating any test.
  • Hours earned through CLEP examinations do not count as hours in residence toward graduation with honors.
  • A maximum of 30 semester hours of test-out credit (including CLEP, AP, IB, and other department-approved test outs) may be earned toward a degree at Cedarville University.
  • Students may take CLEP exams through online proctoring or at other institutions and request to have their scores sent to Cedarville by designating Cedarville University (1151) as a score recipient when buying the exam. A complete list of test centers is available from The College Board.
