Pharmacy Students Give Back to Community

by Rae McKee, Public Relations Writer

Three Cedarville University School of Pharmacy students will serve employees at Meijer in Tipp City, Ohio, by conducting preventative health screenings on February 25.

Tiffany Zehel, from Parma, Ohio; Chelsae Heinz, from Redford, Michigan; and Mallory Thompson, from Xenia, Ohio will be conducting the health screenings as a part of their service project requirements for graduation.

Health screenings provide early detection of diseases that might have otherwise gone undiscovered. Screen tests check for multiple types of cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol and osteoporosis.

Elizabeth Ford, director of community engagement for the school of pharmacy, explained that this partnership with Meijer provides an opportunity for students to use their skills to give back to the community.

“What sets our students apart is that many schools require service learning hours, but our students are required to do pharmacy specific service hours,” said Ford. “Companies like Meijer have come alongside us in many different ways, and this is a great way for our students to serve and gain more hands-on experience.”

Cedarville pharmacy students are required to complete 100 hours of pharmacy-specific community service projects, such as health screenings for the community. Other community service projects that pharmacy students engage in are Students Teaching Educational Plans for Success (STEPS) and a variety of services for Kettering Health Network.

Zehel enjoys doing her service projects because she gets to apply her classes to real-life situations.
