One Bistro provides “Community Meals” every Wednesday night for the homeless at both locations, and the pharmacy students will provide the free health clinics in conjunction with these events.
The October screening takes place during American Pharmacists Month, celebrated annually in October to promote the significant role pharmacists play in patient care. The goal of American Pharmacists Month is to educate the public, policy makers and other health care professionals on how pharmacists provide safe and effective management of medications while helping reduce overall health care costs.
“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with One Bistro and have been working with them to set up a health care-related event,” said Sarah Winey, a pharmacy doctorate student and the patient care vice president of Cedarville’s APhA-ASP student organization. “We are excited because we want to help people and know this event could have a lasting impact on many in southwest Ohio.”
The health clinics consist of four stations that will measure blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels and administer flu shots. Walgreens will be donating one-for-one flu shots so that those who can afford to pay for their own will donate a flu shot to someone who cannot. The goal is to give 75-100 flu shots over the course of the clinics. Although a Walgreens pharmacist will oversee the administration of the flu shots, Cedarville students are immunization-certified.
“We love partnering with One Bistro because we love their mission, which is to help serve and feed undeserved people in Xenia and Dayton,” said Scarlet Lau, a pharmacy doctoral student and the operation immunization chair of Cedarville’s APhA-ASP chapter. “We also partner with Walgreens, who employs our pharmacy interns and supports our pharmacy school events such as supplying flu shots, blood pressure cuffs, and cholesterol and glucose checks.”
“Our goal is to provide beneficial education and health care at this event so that community members return for subsequent meals and potentially follow up on previous discussions about their health,” Winey added. “As future pharmacists, we can play a key role in vaccine education and immunization services.”
