Pharmacy Student Lands Internship with FDA

Ryley Uber, a second-year professional pharmacy student from the Cedarville University School of Pharmacy, has secured a prestigious internship with one of the nation’s top federal agencies.

Uber, a native of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, will spend 10 weeks working for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) in Jefferson, Arkansas. The NCTR is the only branch of the FDA located outside Washington, D.C.

He will work at the NCTR from May 23-July 29 and will focus primarily on using the FDA’s new database, FDA Label, to gather information for statistical research on pharmacogenomics.

Pharmacogenomics is a relatively new field that combines the study of pharmacology with the study of genetics to determine how a person’s genetic makeup may affect their response to certain prescription drugs.

The FDA Label database provides users with extra information on drug listings that companies have submitted to the FDA. The database is used by professionals around the world, but is also accessible to the public.

Uber will be joined by 28 other interns at the NCTR branch. This year’s group of interns represents a wide range of skill sets, ranging from undergraduates to doctoral students with experience in mathematics and toxicology research.

“This internship is a special opportunity to work with some of the nation’s top interdisciplinary scientists,” said Uber. “It will be a beneficial experience as I learn to work with those in different health care disciplines. It is something that I can carry on into my future career, as I work with people in all areas of health care.”

Uber is currently in the midst of clinical rotations at Wayne Healthcare Hospital in Greenville, Ohio, and has interned at CVS Pharmacy in his hometown during holiday and summer breaks.

“The Cedarville University School of Pharmacy has prepared me through rigorous academics and the valuable guidance and advice of professors,” said Uber.

Located in southwest Ohio, Cedarville University is an accredited, Christ-centered, Baptist institution with an enrollment of 3,711 undergraduate, graduate, and online students in more than 100 areas of study. Founded in 1887, Cedarville is recognized nationally for its authentic Christian community, rigorous academic programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings, and leading student satisfaction ratings.
