How to Insert and Edit Video in PowerPoint

In PowerPoint 2016 and 2010, you can insert a video file from your computer directly into your slideshow presentation. Using PowerPoint's [Video Tools] tab, you can edit the video in a number of ways. This function is not available in PowerPoint 2013 or versions prior to PowerPoint 2010.

Warning!

While you can insert almost any video type into your presentation, not all video types are compatible with some of the functions described below. If the video is not compatible, some of the options in the toolbar will be grayed-out. If you hover over these options, you will see a message that reads, "This command is not supported for this object."  

Insert a Video

  1. In PowerPoint, click the [Insert] tab > Locate the "Media" group.
  2. Click [Video] > Select "Video on My PC."
  3. Select the desired video file > Click [Insert].

Insert a Video Bookmark

  1. In PowerPoint, select the video in which you would like to insert a bookmark. The "Video Tools" section will appear in the toolbar. 
  2. Click the [Playback] tab > Locate the "Bookmarks" group. 
  3. In your video, click [Play] > Click the [Add Bookmark] at the point of the video you wish to bookmark.
  4. To play the bookmarked section of the video, click the bookmark icon (yellow dot) in either preview or fullscreen mode > Click the [Play] button.

Trim the Start and End of a Video

  1. In PowerPoint, select the video you wish to trim. The "Video Tools" section will appear in the toolbar. 
  2. Click the [Playback] tab > Locate the "Editing" group > Click [Trim Video]. 
  3. Within the video, move the green slidebar to a new start location.
  4. Move the red slidebar to a new end position > Click [OK].
  5. When finished, replay the trimmed video clip.
