Pharmaceutical Science Research

Pharmaceutical sciences combine a broad range of scientific disciplines — including medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, structural biology, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, and toxicology — that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. The scope of research in pharmaceutical sciences ranges from identifying new drug targets and therapeutic agents to delivery and repurposing of drugs in clinical settings. At Cedarville University School of Pharmacy, research within this field is focused on medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology.

Medicinal Chemistry

Medicinal chemistry is a discipline with a focus on organic synthetic chemistry with the goal of discovering new drugs. At Cedarville, current research in this field will explore the safety, standardization, and effectiveness of botanical preparations and nutraceutical supplements and their potential for drug-drug interactions or drug-food interactions. The faculty is also collaborating with regional hospitals and nutraceutical companies on research projects and teaching elective courses.

Pharmacology

Pharmacological research investigates the underlying mechanisms of interaction between drug molecules and the human body by developing advanced synthetic or biologically derived molecules that can treat or cure various pathophysiological conditions. Research interests of our faculty are focused on studying the mechanisms of brain tumor invasive growth, contractile function of vascular smooth muscles, and development of monoclonal antibody therapies. To support these research initiatives, the labs are equipped with state-of-the-art confocal microscope, HPLC, and tissue bath apparatus. The faculty is also collaborating with academic institutions and biotech companies in developing new research projects.

Toxicology

Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical, or biological agents on living organisms and the ecosystem, including the prevention and amelioration of such adverse effects. Toxicology research of our faculty focuses on studying the impact of changing the environments on animal behavior. Our current research collaborators in this field include regional academic and research institutions.
